Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Farmhouse dining tables originated in European rural homes, designed primarily as sturdy, utilitarian surfaces for large families to prepare and consume meals. Their generous proportions and robust construction reflected the communal lifestyle of agricultural communities.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid native hardwoods, predominantly oak, joined using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. This joinery allows the timber to expand and contract naturally with seasonal humidity changes without compromising structural integrity.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patination, tool marks from hand-adzed or pit-sawn timber, and wear patterns consistent with age. Inspection of the underside and joint construction often reveals hand-cut joinery and handmade iron or wooden fixings rather than modern machine screws.

Pairing a large wooden table with modern seating, such as minimalist chairs or acrylic designs, creates a balanced juxtaposition between historical character and contemporary minimalism. Alternatively, layering with simple linen runners and understated tableware keeps the focus on the natural grain of the timber.

Maintain antique oak by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and applying a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood and protect against moisture. Avoid placing timber furniture near direct heat sources or in strong direct sunlight to prevent warping and drying out.
