This 19th-century French country prune drying rack takes the form of a rustic farmhouse decorative object constructed from cleft hazel and wood in a weathered brown colour. The piece adopts an open slat construction featuring a teardrop frame filled with numerous horizontal cleft hazel slats, accompanied by a curved timber framework, dark ageing marks, and visible grain texture across the aged timber surfaces. Measuring 106 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, the rack provides a distinctive wall-hanging display option for a domestic interior. Homeowners typically mount this piece vertically above a sideboard in a dining room, kitchen, or living area to introduce rustic French country character and organic texture to wall spaces.

FAQs

A French prune drying rack, traditionally known as a clayette a pruneaux, is an agricultural implement designed to dry plums and other fruits in the sun or specialised kilns. Originating from rural France, these racks feature open wooden slatting to ensure optimal airflow during the curing process.

These racks were constructed using split or cleft hazel timber, which provided strength alongside flexible handling. Hazel strips were arranged horizontally and bound within a steamed or bentwood frame, creating a lightweight grid structure designed for repeated seasonal utility.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-split timber with irregular grain patterns, original iron or wooden fasteners, and signs of functional wear, such as darkened wood from fruit sugars or kiln exposure. The frame typically displays a hand-carved teardrop or rectangular silhouette consistent with regional crafting techniques.

Interior designers frequently mount these agricultural racks on walls as sculptural graphic focal points or folk art installations. Their open slatted design adds organic texture to minimalist walls, dining rooms, or kitchen spaces.

Dry timber structures should be kept in climate-controlled environments away from direct damp or high humidity to prevent warping. Light dusting with a soft brush and an occasional application of natural clear beeswax will preserve the wood without altering its original patina.
