Description

A magnificent pair of French antique card / console tables. They were made in France, they are signed by the maker E.P December 1859.

The quality is absolutely amazing, they are beautifully designed with some incredibly fine features. The gilt bronze ormolu mounts are exquisitely cast with beautiful details and just the right colour tone. They are made from solid and inlaid rosewood, walnut and various other woods. There is profuse inlay on all sides, even the backs. The tops display wonderful floral marquetry and both are remarkably signed by the cabinet maker in inlaid wood. The back legs pull out and the tops unfold to reveal baize lined playing surfaces. The baize has worn more on one table than the other, it has beautifully embossed edges so we have left as is. They could be re-baized if desired.

They would work perfectly as a pair of console tables and would look absolutely stunning in a variety of settings.

We have had them re-polished with some finely executed restoration to the top of one table. The condition is excellent for their age.

French card tables gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, driven by the fashionable rise of parlour games and card playing among the European aristocracy.

These tables are traditionally constructed from hardwood frames such as walnut or mahogany, embellished with intricate wood veneer marquetry, brass or ormolu mounts, and clever folding mechanisms.

Authentic pieces are identified by hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, hand-chased brass mounts, and traditional hand-rubbed French polish finishes.

They work exceptionally well as statement console tables in hallways or living spaces, providing a surface for lamps and decorative objects while offering functional folding capabilities.

Preserve antique marquetry by keeping it out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and occasionally treating the timber with traditional beeswax rather than modern chemical polishes.
