Beautiful Antique English Letter / Postal Scale - Walnut & Engraved Brass C.1900

Description

Dating to the late Victorian era, this is departure for the more commonly seen examples, with a solid Walnut base and beautifully decorated pans.

The serpentine shaped base stands on it's original three turned feet and is beautifully polished to showcase the decorative grain and cognac coloured patina which only comes with age.

The right-hand pan is beautifully engraved, which one only sees on top-notch examples, this is carried through to the left-hand pan, with an engraved frame around the postal rates of the day. These rates allow us to accurately date to the late Victorian or Edwardian era, these rates came into operation in June 1897, this scale with it's decoration would date it to around 1900.

A handsome desk-top accessory in superb condition. The base measures 9 1/2" x 5 1/2".
