Nineteenth-century farmhouse tables are characterised by utilitarian designs built for daily domestic use, featuring sturdy timber construction, generous proportions, and functional extension mechanisms.

These tables were typically constructed from regional hardwoods such as cherry, oak, or elm, utilising traditional joinery like mortise and tenon joints, hand-turned legs, and operational slide or draw-leaf extension systems.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut joinery, natural timber shrinkage, oxidisation consistent with age, and mechanism hardware specific to the nineteenth century.

A period wooden table provides warmth and historical contrast in contemporary spaces, pairing effectively with minimalist modern seating or industrial lighting to balance old and new elements.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and cleaning surfaces periodically with a soft, dry cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
