Imari ware is a type of Japanese porcelain traditionally produced in the town of Arita, in the Hizen province of northwestern Kyushu. It was widely exported to Europe from the port of Imari starting in the late 17th century during the Edo period, becoming highly sought after by Western collectors.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from hard-paste porcelain, painted underglaze in cobalt blue and overglaze in iron red, with extensive additions of gilt (gold) accents. The colour palette traditionally relies on a contrasting combination of deep cobalt blue, vibrant red, and white, highlighted with metallic gold.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century typically feature dense, intricate hand-painted brocade patterns, stylized floral motifs, and landscapes. Inspection of the glaze under magnification often reveals fine craquelure, kiln spurs, hand-ground foot rims, and minor imperfections consistent with historical handcrafting techniques.

Large chargers can be displayed securely on a wall using a specialized plate hanger to add rich colour and pattern to a room, or mounted on a sturdy stand displayed upon a sideboard or mantelpiece as a focal point, contrasting against neutral walls.

Antique porcelain should be cleaned strictly by hand using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent when necessary. Avoid soaking items with gilt decoration or repairs, and never place antique ceramics in a dishwasher or microwave.
