Cellarettes and wine coolers originated in the late 17th century and became particularly popular in the Georgian and Regency periods as formal dining rooms required dedicated storage for cooling and holding wine bottles before service.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense cabinet timbers such as mahogany or oak, often featuring internal lead or zinc linings designed to hold ice and water alongside brass fixtures and castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned elements, original hardware such as brass locks and castors, and natural timber patina consistent with age and usage.

Such pieces can be repurposed as low side tables, plant stands, or discrete storage containers in living rooms and dining spaces, adding textural warmth and historic contrast to contemporary decor.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood grain.
