Welsh Miner’s Naive Folk Art Woolwork C1910

Description

This NAIVE FOLK ART WOOLWORK, framed and behind glass, comes with provenance and a story.

The WOOLWORK depicts THE CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST.

The back of the picture tells the story:

‘By Walter Elton circa 1900. Born in South Petherton, Somerset 1875. Coal Miner killed underground by being chopped up by runaway trucks in a Welsh Mine November 7th 1914 and buried in Bedwelty Cemetery November 12th 1914.

A religious man who always carried a bible. He left five children all under 10 years old. 4 sons and one daughter (Mary Elizabeth Epton (24/04/1905 - 24/06/1995) who kept the picture until her death.

Picture reframed by grandson Cliff Whittingham (January 28th 1989). Could smell coal fumes and found candle wax spots on the canvas creating a strong link to the past’.

In good condition.
