FAQs

Fold-over tables, including card and tea tables, gained immense popularity during the Georgian and Regency periods in Britain. They were ingeniously designed as multifunctional pieces, remaining compact against a wall when not in use and opening up to accommodate guests for games or social gatherings.

Authentic period tables are typically crafted from dense hardwoods like solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary timbers such as oak or pine. Traditional construction features include hand-cut dovetails in any drawer boxes, mortise and tenon joinery, and brass hinges or swing legs to support the folding leaf.

Authentication relies on examining the timber grain, hand-cut joinery marks, and the oxidisation of the wood underneath. Hand-forged screws, irregular dovetails, and subtle wear patterns around the hinges and keyholes typically indicate genuine period manufacture rather than modern replication.

This versatile piece functions effectively in a living room, hallway, or dining space either closed against a wall as a console with a lamp on top or opened up to display decorative objects. Its clean lines and warm timber tones complement both traditional period homes and modern minimalist spaces.

To maintain the finish, keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping or fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax periodically to nourish the timber, avoiding silicone-based sprays.
