Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Vent hole inside the hollow lid: steam release during kiln firing.
Fine crazing throughout the glaze: natural movement between body and glaze over time.
Unglazed foot rim with ingrained dirt: earthenware resting unglazed in the kiln.
Overglaze enamel decoration: colours painted by hand over the fired glaze.

This nineteenth-century Victorian Staffordshire pottery tobacco jar and cover consists of a polychrome glazed earthenware body in two sections. The lower part is modelled as a barrel with vertical red, yellow, and brown segments, blue and white banding at the rims, and a central white cartouche with relief lettering reading TOBACCO. Sitting on top is a separate cover sculpted as a seated Pierrot in a white patterned suit with purple striped trousers and a green hat, carrying a putti on his right shoulder who holds a small cup towards the clown's mouth. Fine craquelure covers the glazed surfaces, and some minor wear is visible on the painted details and footwear. Measuring 34.25 cm high, 14.6 cm wide, and 14.6 cm deep overall, this item works well in a gentleman's library or study. Placed upon a mantelpiece, sideboard, or desk, it serves as a decorative storage container for a collection or as a standalone display piece in a traditional interior setting.

Victorian Staffordshire pottery tobacco jars were decorative earthenware vessels manufactured in Staffordshire, England, during the nineteenth century, designed to store pipe tobacco and maintain moisture levels.

These jars were typically moulded from earthenware or pearlware, finished with a clear glaze, and hand-painted using enamel colours or underglaze tints before a final kiln firing.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces often display fine surface crazing beneath the glaze, visible moulding seams, unglazed base rims, and hand-applied enamel detailing, frequently appearing without maker marks.

A figurative ceramic tobacco jar can be displayed on a mantlepiece, side table, or within a bookshelf vignette to add visual interest and historical character to modern spaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid immersing the pottery in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, which can degrade the delicate enamel pigments and original glaze.
