French Empire console tables emerged during the early 19th century, heavily influenced by neoclassical design, Roman architecture, and the military campaigns of Napoleon, often featuring architectural columns and symmetrical proportions.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, frequently accented with fire-gilded bronze mounts and topped with heavy slabs of grey or white marble.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawer construction, original mercury-silvered mirror glass with subtle oxidisation, hand-carved or cast brass mounts, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with age.

Pair the classical architectural lines with minimalist modern surroundings, using the marble surface for sculptural objects or contemporary lamps to create a striking contrast between old and new.

Clean the mahogany surface using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and feed the wood periodically with traditional beeswax, while maintaining the marble top with neutral, non-acidic soap to prevent etching.
