Georgian Mahogany Plate Bucket, or Pail

18th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

Georgian mahogany coopered plate pail, brass bound, with folding cast brass bow carrying handle, now with tole liner of later date.

English circa 1780 - 1800.

The long passages which frequently separated kitchen and dining room in eighteenth century homes made the carrying of plates a formidable task for servants. To facilitate transport, mahogany pails were produced, the open section to enable the plates to be readily handled.

In 1769, Chippendale’s firm supplied Sir Edward Knatchbull with ‘a neat mahogany plate basket with brass bow handle.’

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In 18th-century English dining rooms, plate buckets were designed to transport ceramic and porcelain dinner plates between the kitchen and the dining area, often featuring a vertical cutout slot for easy loading and unloading.

Authentic Georgian examples were typically constructed from mahogany staves, reinforced with brass binding bands, and fitted with an overhead brass swing handle and a removable inner metal liner.

Look for hand-riveted brass straps, authentic timber wear around the rim and base, period fasteners, and natural patination on both the timber and metal components.

Modern interior designers frequently repurpose these vessels as decorative wine coolers, umbrella stands in hallways, or planter holders for indoor foliage.

Dust the wooden surface regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to maintain the patinated timber finish, and avoid harsh abrasive polishes on the brass elements.
