Lady with a Basket of Grapes, Parian Ware Porcelain, Mid-19th Century

19th century
Description

A 19th century Victorian parian ware china figure. (Parian ware is bisque porcelain that imitates marble. It was designed around 1845 by Staffordshire pottery manufacturer Mintons and named after Paros, a Greek island famous for its fine-grained white Paros marble, which has been used since ancient times).

This charming figurine depicts a girl gracefully carrying a full basket of ripe grapes. The statuette is skillfully executed, although its maker is hard to identify as any branding that may have been present on the base has worn down over time. Based on its style and the design of the stand, it might be a product of Minton. This particular figurine showcases a high level of craftsmanship, especially in the detailing of the girl's face, her dress and the grape with leaves garland adorning her head. A unique feature for a parian piece is the girl's colored hair, carefully painted by the artist, with its golden hue harmonizing perfectly with the marble-white figure. Her face is delicately decorated in soft pastel colors, signifying the hand of a true master. The figure has a circular plinth base which is integrated into the piece but there are no maker's marks.

Height 33,5 cm

Base diameter 11.5 cm

Weight 1131 grams

Condition:small and expected chips on the leaves, loss of a few beads on the dress, a few small dots arising from the firing.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the mid-19th century, Parian ware is a type of unglazed bisque porcelain formulated to emulate carved white Parian marble from Greece.

It was produced by pouring liquid slip containing a high percentage of feldspar into plaster moulds, resulting in a fine, semi-translucent matte finish after firing.

Authentic pieces feature a distinct marble-like texture, sharp moulded details, a heavy vitreous body, and occasionally makers marks or registration stamps impressed into the base.

Display these classical figures on dark wooden console tables, inside glazed cabinets, or atop stacked books to create strong visual contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Dust regularly with a soft brush and clean surface grime gently using lukewarm water with mild soap, taking care not to submerge decorated or painted elements.
