Curious Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
This is a beautifully carved representation of a snake god using the natural curves of the wood and would have been used at important ceremonies / festivals. The snakes head has been inset with bone (or animal teeth) to represent the eyes and teeth and it has a great tribal/primitive quality. The wood has taken on a lovely deep ,rich colour/patina following years of handling and use.
