Portuguese majolica developed substantially in the 19th century, heavily influenced by 16th-century French Palissy ware. Centers of production, such as Caldas da Rainha, became renowned for producing high-relief earthenware featuring naturalistic flora, fauna, and trompe loeil fruit arrangements.

Majolica is constructed from earthenware clay that is press-moulded or hand-modelled to create three-dimensional relief forms. The piece is fired, hand-painted with metallic oxide glazes, and fired again to produce a glossy, impervious surface.

Authentic pieces frequently display impressed makers marks or initials on the underside, such as those from prominent workshops in Caldas da Rainha. Inspection of the underside reveals unglazed terracotta foot rims, lead glaze pooling, and characteristic signs of age such as fine crazing.
