A linen proofer, also known as a thread counter, is a folding magnifying device historically used in the textile industry to inspect the weave density and thread count of fabrics per square inch.

These pieces were typically cast in solid brass with hinged folding frames designed to collapse flat, featuring precision-ground glass lenses fitted into the aperture.

Authentic pieces from this era often feature traditional makers stamps, patinated cast brass construction with hand-finished joints, and optical glass lenses rather than modern plastics.

This object works well as a sculptural desk accessory or curiosity, placed on top of stacked books, within a home office, or displayed on a mantlepiece.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes to preserve the natural historical patina and finish of the brass.
