Antique Treen 19thc "Turks Knot" Sailors Seam Rubber. English C1840.

Description

A well carved walnut sailors seam rubber or liner of pleasing proportions, having an impressive carved "Turks Head" knot and the owners initials J W....these collectable maritime items were made in various hard woods and sometimes whale bone....they were used by sailors or sailmaker's for smoothing the seams in canvas and also flattening the double line of waxed stitches into the canvas.....the seam rubber has gained a very good patina and natural colour from years of constant use.
