This Victorian Staffordshire earthenware clock group dates from circa 1860, presenting a decorative figural arrangement in the English Country House style. The composition includes three sculpted dogs with distinct coats and polychrome enamelling in white, black and russet, surrounding a central painted clock face on a moulded base. Fine definition appears in the modelled fur, while skilled painting brings the flanking attendant spaniels to life against a hand-painted dial. The glossy ceramic glaze reflects the light, showing bright colours alongside a small, old surface chip to the back edge and an original under-glaze dark line. The object measures 24 cm high, 21 cm wide, 6 cm deep. Traditional mantelpieces and display shelves provide ideal settings for this figurine group in a modern home, where it adds a touch of mid-nineteenth-century character. Placed on a living room shelf or a bedroom mantel, the ornament brings traditional narrative charm and Victorian craftsmanship to interior schemes. Collectors of Staffordshire pottery and antique animal figures will find this piece a practical addition to existing displays of decorative earthenware.

A Staffordshire pottery clock group is a 19th-century decorative earthenware figure featuring modelled animals or figures surrounding a painted or functional clock dial. Produced primarily in Staffordshire, England, these pieces were designed as popular mantelpiece ornaments for Victorian homes.

These figures were press-moulded or slip-cast using local earthenware clay, fired in kilns, and coated in a lead glaze. Details were applied by hand using overglaze enamel pigments and occasionally metallic lusters or gilding.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically exhibit press-moulded hollow construction with a small steam release hole at the base or back. They frequently display surface glaze crazing, hand-painted polychrome enamel details with minor variations, and a flat back designed for wall or mantelpiece display.

Position the ceramic figure as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard alongside structured modern tabletop items. Combining traditional figural pottery with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a balanced, curated visual contrast.

Dust the ceramic figure regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a fine camel-hair brush. Avoid immersing the figure in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as moisture can penetrate glaze crazing and compromise the earthenware body or hand-painted enamels.
