Victorian games tables gained immense popularity during the 19th century as social card games and parlor entertainment became central to middle and upper-class domestic life.

These tables were typically constructed using a secondary softwood base overlaid with choice veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring intricate carvings and turned pedestals.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery methods, hand-cut dovetails, genuine veneer grain patterns, patination on the timber, and period-appropriate hardware such as brass castors.

An antique games table can be incorporated into a contemporary setting by placing it as a functional console or accent piece, allowing the rich timber tones to add warmth and historic contrast.

Burr walnut should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and maintained periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicon polishes.
