Edwardian Cased Pocket Damp Protector or Hygrometer

1900 - 1920
Description

A unusual Edwardian pocket size Damp Detector or hygrometer contained within a blue velvet lined leather case. In good working order and excellent condition.

Case size. 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.25 cm

These instruments gained popularity during the latter part of the 19th century where they were devised for measuring how damp cloth and linens were when they were returned from laundries used by the wealthy due to the lack of home facilities. The fear of cold and flu was a tangible concern at the time and these ‘pocket damp detectors’ were recommended for use in an 1889 publication named, “Suggestions to mothers on the management of their children” to ensure that healthy standards were met. Due to their portability, they are also considered to have been used for travelling purposes and the testing of hotel linens and overnight facilities.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
