A Relief Bust by Joseph Edwards

19th century
Description

An interesting and decorative relief bust by the Welsh sculptor Joseph Edwards 1814-1882. The relief bust shows the sitter in profile with wonderful detail and is probably cast in plaster with a painted stone finish. The work is engraved with the artist’s name and dated 1846. Joseph Edwards was a highly regarded sculptor of the Victorian age he was much in demand for memorials but did also exhibit and create works depicting contempory figures and families. He exhibited seventy of his works at The Royal Academy between 1838-1878 and was also a student at the schools there when he first moved to London from Merthyr Tydfil. This piece is fitted in the original gilt frame and as such was probably a piece made for one of the families he worked for rather than a memorial for outside. The gilt frame is wonderful quality and in absolutely untouched original condition. The whole piece has great country house look and is in wonderful condition.
