This nineteenth-century pipe tomahawk originates from the Native American Dakota Sioux of the Great Plains, representing a traditional weapon and smoking implement from the period around 1850. The piece displays a forged iron and steel construction, combining a dark brown wooden haft with an iron grey metal head. The head features a distinctive pipe bowl mounted to the poll above a flared axe blade, alongside horizontal decorative mouldings across the neck and mild surface oxidation from age. The wooden shaft shows a smooth, dark grain finish with visible natural warmth along its length. Measuring 20 cm high by 45 cm wide and 4 cm deep, the artifact has a compact overall footprint. In a modern interior, this pipe tomahawk suits display within a gentleman's library or study environment. It rests securely upon a dedicated bookshelf or enclosed display cabinet, adding historical character to collections of ethnographic items or tribal antiquities. The tactile combination of dark timber and forged iron brings an authentic nineteenth-century focal point to specialized shelving setups without occupying excessive room space. Collectors position the item horizontally or vertically against library backdrops to highlight the traditional pipe bowl poll and forged eye section details.

A pipe tomahawk is a dual-purpose artifact created during the North American fur trade era, combining an axe blade with a functional smoking pipe bowl. These objects served functional, symbolic, and ceremonial roles in trade and diplomatic exchanges between European traders and Native American tribes.

Mid-19th-century pipe tomahawks feature a forged iron or steel head attached to a drilled wooden haft, typically crafted from native hardwoods such as ash, hickory, or walnut. The metal head includes a pipe bowl on the poll, connected via a hollow channel through the timber handle for smoking.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-forged construction marks, natural patination, and age-appropriate wear around the eye and haft connection. Original pieces feature hand-drilled wooden hafts showing historical oxidisation and wear patterns that modern reproductions struggle to replicate accurately.

Mount the piece on a bespoke museum-style display stand or place it within a shallow shadow-box frame to highlight its sculptural profile. It functions as a focal historical accent on a library bookshelf, dark wood mantelpiece, or inside a cabinet of curiosities.

Preserve the original patina by avoiding chemical cleaners or abrasive metal polishes on the iron head. Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax to protect the metal from oxidisation and prevent the timber handle from drying out.
