A chapan is a traditional long, loose-fitting robe worn across Central Asia, particularly in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. Historically worn by both men and women across various social strata, these garments served as practical attire against harsh continental climates and as indicators of social status.

Traditional chapans are typically constructed using hand-woven silk or cotton fabrics, often featuring intricate ikat dyeing techniques where warp threads are bound and dyed prior to weaving. They are generally lined with printed cotton fabric and lightly padded with cotton wadding for warmth.

Authentic antique chapans feature hand-spun and hand-woven textiles, natural organic dyes, hand-stitching along the seams and linings, and distinct regional patterning characteristics of 19th or early 20th-century craftsmanship. Signs of age, including thread wear and traditional patch repairs, often support authenticity.

In interior design, an antique chapan is frequently displayed flat behind glass as textile art or draped over a stand as a decorative sculptural element. As a wearable piece, it functions as a statement outer layer paired with minimalist modern garments to highlight its vibrant historical patterns.

Historic textiles require storage away from direct sunlight in temperature-controlled, dry environments to prevent fading and fibre degradation. Avoid hanging heavy antique garments for extended periods to prevent structural stress on the shoulders; instead, support them flat on acid-free tissue.
