Antique Framed Indenture, English, Vellum, Document, 17th Century, Dated 1671

17th century
Description

This is an antique framed indenture. An English, vellum document in modern frame, dating to the 17th century and later, dated to 1671.

Issued in three parts, indentures were legal documents cut with wavy edges, meaning two copies could be matched for authenticity. This wavy shaped cut, known as toothed gave part of the document's name - the indenture. The third part - the tripartite indenture - would remain with the court once an agreement had been reached.

Fascinating legal indenture issued in the 17th century

Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order

Hand-written across 52 lines in quill ink on wavy cut vellum

Vellum is historically chosen for its long-term legibility - said to be up to 1000 years

Issued on February 8th 1671, on behalf of a William Faulkner

Superb calligraphy leading letter adds visual interest to the document

Tastefully presented in a later, burr walnut and gilt finished frame

Dressed to the rear with mounting rope for ease of hanging

This is a delightful antique framed indenture, a fascinating legal record from 17th century England - the indenture was issued in the City of Coventry in 1671. Presented in a quality modern frame and ready to display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An indenture is a formal legal contract or deed written on vellum or parchment, historically featuring a wavy cut edge that matched a duplicate copy to verify authenticity.

Documents from this era were scriven on calfskin or sheepskin vellum using iron gall ink, frequently accompanied by red wax seals attached via woven tapes or vellum strips.

Authentic period documents feature handwritten calligraphy, characteristic age tone and ink fading, uneven scalloped top borders, and original wax seal attachments.

Display the framed piece within a gallery wall, above a console table, or inside a home study to add historic texture and visual interest to modern decor.

Position framed vellum away from direct sunlight and moisture fluctuations to prevent material distortion, and use UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting materials.
