Description

This is a fine example of an early 19thc large teetotum made of bone, probably made by Napoleonic prisoners of war ....it is of an octagonal (eight sided) shape and numbered 1 to 8 and would have been used by the prisoners playing gambling games....it is in very good condition and still retains the original colours to the numbers.....some minor surface cracks from a long time ago can be seen in the photos, but probably happened when it was made and do not detract or diminish in any way.....it still spins perfectly as you can see from the last picture.

English / French C1815.

A teetotum is a historical multi-sided spinning top used as a gambling device or for parlour games, particularly popular during the 18th and 19th centuries across Europe.

These gaming pieces were typically hand-carved from animal bone, ivory, or various hardwoods, often featuring hand-inked or engraved numbers and letters on each facet.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural yellowing, microscopic surface crazing, hand-carved tool marks, and organic grain patterns consistent with genuine animal bone rather than modern synthetic resin.

Small collectables like teetotums can be displayed inside glass cloches, within apothecary cabinets, or styled atop a stack of vintage books on a coffee table or bookshelf.

Bone artefacts should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and excessive moisture to prevent warping, cracking, or fading of the ink.
