Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
The eagle head is mounted on a solid oak shield of great colour and patina. The gong is the original and hangs from the snake in the eagle’s beak. The beater in lignum vitae is the original and fits perfectly on the support at the base of the oak shield. The piece retains the William Tonks and Son mark on the reverse of the oak shield. The whole is the most wonderful quality and quite the best model of a dinner gong you will see. C.1890.
