Notes on Henry Shaw taken from ‘A History of British Taxidermy’ by C. Frost:
Described by Montagu Brown as an excellent taxidermist. Shaw also arranged the bird collections at Clungunford and Ludlow Museum.
The private museum at Clungunford near Ludlow was that of John Rock, a naturalist and collector, who was in touch with many of the country’s leading naturalists, including John Gould, Howard Saunders and John Hancock. He commissioned Henry Shaw to begin the classification and mounting of the birds for his museum in 1860. Pairs of every species of British birds, mostly in adult plumage were represented in the collection including a Great Auk and its egg, and was regarded in its day as one of the finest and most complete collections of its kind in the country. Henry Shaw’s reputation as a knowledgeable ornithologist and taxidermist, soon spread and he received orders from far and wide.
