Antique Brass Field Microscope

19th century
Description

Good example of a late 19th / early 20th Century student microscope in it's original fitted wooden case with an eyepiece lens, a stacking objective lens and brass tweezers.

The microscope itself is made of brass and is a typical upright design with a tubular body which is manually adjusted for the focus. It has a circular stage and a mirror below to direct the light. There are no maker's details anywhere on the microscope but it is typical of late 19th Century English design microscopes.

The microscope comes in it a fitted mahogany box. The box is strong and sturdy with two closing latches on the front.

The microscope appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. I'm sure the lenses would probably benefit from a clean but they produced a clear image all the same and the microscope was easy to focus.

Overall the microscope is in good condition for its age. It has been used and will have normal signs of wear. The brass is tarnished and the lacquer has worn in places but there are no major damages and it displays well. Although in working order it is really being sold as a decorative / collectors item rather than an accurate scientific instrument.

Approximate Measurements:

Box Height : 2" (5 cm)

Width : 6 1/2" (16.5 cm)

Depth : 2 1/4" (6 cm)

Microscope Length : 7" (18 cm)

Diameter of Lens : 1 3/4" (4.5 cm)

The best description comes from the photographs so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
