Fine William IV Map Sampler

19th century
Description

A fine example of a map sampler in silks on linen. The work beautifully and intricately depicts all the counties of England and Wales, and some of the parts of Scotland and Ireland. The counties are individually stitched in various colours and major towns are also shown. The whole has the most wonderful and elaborate floral border which is probably the best I have seen. The sampler is in amazing bright condition with virtually no colour loss at all. I think this must be that it was not framed until the earlier part of the twentieth century from when the frame dates. The sampler is dated 1831 and the maker is named as Emma Nelsey of Boston, Lincolnshire. The whole is in very good condition, there is the odd very minor hole to the base linen but no loss of stitching. A fine example of a map sampler in great condition and with a wonderful period look.
