Taxidermy - Kingfisher & Eggs in Realistic River Bank Setting by Peter Spicer & Sons

1900 - 1920
Description

A remarkable case by Peter Spicer & Sons of Leamington Spa. Circa 1905. This famous Victorian taxidermy firm was and is regarded by many as best of all the British taxidermists.

This particular case is unlabeled, which is unusual, but as with other Victorian taxidermy firms commission work for other for retail stores and country/sporting retailers such as “Harrods” the “Army & Navy” stores was welcome business and Spicer’s was no exception, on these occasions their trade label is omitted.

45cm wide x 34cm high x 25cm deep.

Note. The original eggs have been removed from this case to comply with the ban on selling birds eggs, and have been replaced with replicas (faux eggs bye the highly regarded replica egg specialist Tony Ladd) in the same position they originally were. An image is available of the case before I carried out this work. A copy of Tony Ladds invoice is attached to the back of the case.

Foot note: I have collected taxidermy by Peter Spicer of Royal Leamington Spa for many years and published “A Record of Spicer’s” a book devoted to this famous firm in 2001, and ran a very successful business dealing in fine Victorian taxidermy “The Victorian Taxidermy Co Ltd” and find it interesting to note that in all this time I have never seen or owned another Spicer case with a clutch of eggs. The only exceptions being a beautiful Cock Pheasant with a singular egg, and a rather spectacular Kiwi with its naturally oversized egg that is in the Warwick Museum, the home to a rather special Spicer collection.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
