FAQs

A knitting sheath is a traditional domestic tool used in hand knitting, primarily in northern England and Scotland, designed to hold one needle steady while the knitter worked quickly with the other hand.

Knitting sheaths were typically hand-carved or turned from dense local hardwoods such as yew, boxwood, fruitwood, and occasionally bone or horn, often crafted by hand as tokens of affection or utilitarian folk art.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural timber shrinkage, tool marks from hand-turning or carving, and a deep patina developed from handling and age, whereas modern copies often show machine-made precision and lack historical wear.

These small-scale wooden objects can be displayed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or within a cabinet of curiosities as a sculptural element that adds historical texture to a room.

Treen should be kept away from direct sunlight and dramatic humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking, and it can be maintained occasionally with a light application of microcrystalline wax.
