Large Antique (Early 20thc) Japanese Bamboo Fruit Basket (Morikago) with Copper Insert

1900 - 1920
Description

Large Antique (early 20thC) Japanese bamboo fruit basket (morikago) with copper insert. Beautifully made and designed it’s constructed with a bent bamboo frame and twill plaits for the body. The bottom of the basket features a double diamond pattern achieved with a variation of plover plait. The bifurcated handles were bundle-plated with a rather free spirit approach and show a poetic suggestion of movement, as if the bamboos were still swaying in the wind. The basket comes with its original copper insert. Surprisingly unsigned but clearly by a master craftsman. Measures 38 x 33cm, bowl height is 12cm (40cm to top of handle).

A morikago is a shallow open basket with a handle and was traditionally used to display fruits, sometimes flowers, during the Sencha tea ceremony. In contrast to Chanoyu, the Sencha ceremony uses loose green tea leaves instead of tea powder. The placement of loose fruits in the basket meant that the pattern of the bottom, which is often elaborate, was meant to be visible.

Lovely condition and patina. A masterpiece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
