Rare 18th Century Hungarian Cavalry Sabre

18th century
Description

This is an incredibly rare Hungarian cavalryman's sabre dating from the early 18th century. The sabre is in excellent condition given its 300 years of age. The 79cm single edge curved steel blade has two narrow fullers to each side. The original leather-bound grip is also in superb order and has an attractive, deep patina. There is pitting to the blade and to the L-shaped steel crossguard, langets and pommel, commensurate with age.

Eastern European sabres of this type began to appear around the mid-17th century, evolving from the German Messer, or, "War Knife / Great Knife" of the Renaissance Era. By the late 18th century, the use of sabres in cavalry warfare had spread to Western European powers such as Britain and France, who began equipping their light cavalry regiments in the manner of the Hungarian/Polish Hussars. The British 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre, one of the most famous swords of the Napoleonic Wars, is one such example.

This elegant and rare sword would make a fine addition to any collection.
