This Victorian stoneware spirit barrel is made of buff brown ceramic with a brass spigot near the base and a cork at the top. The vessel takes a cylindrical barrel shape with raised horizontal moulded bands encircling the body, impressed lettering that reads "1 GAL", a raised rectangular label marked "GIN", and a prominent applied royal coat of arms relief featuring a crown, lion, shield, unicorn, and motto. The ceramic displays visible surface crazing throughout its glaze. It measures 26 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece sits well upon a sideboard top or within a gentleman's library display. The container functions as a decorative accessory or period display item, bringing a traditional pub or tavern aesthetic to a home bar, dining room, or living space.

FAQs

Stoneware gin barrels were manufactured during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for use in public houses, taverns, and wine merchants to store and dispense spirits directly from counter displays.

These containers were crafted from heavy salt-glazed stoneware ceramic, featuring moulded relief lettering and heraldic details, combined with a fitted brass spigot tap near the base.

Authentic period pieces display impressed maker marks, raised relief crests or spirit labels, surface crazing within the glaze, and original brass fittings set into heavy ceramic bodies.

A stoneware spirit barrel functions well on a sideboard top, kitchen island, or home bar counter, providing a structural focal point within traditional, industrial, or rustic interiors.

Clean the ceramic surface using warm water and a soft cloth without harsh chemicals or immersion, while applying mild polish selectively to preserve original brass fixtures.
