Three German Art Deco porcelain bathing beauty figures represent a group of stylized female swimmers wearing red and light blue swimsuits, complete with matching swim caps and hand-painted facial features. One reclining figure rests upon a red lifebuoy dish inscribed with seaside text reading 'The girl on the buoy at Margate'. The glazed ceramic items exhibit a multicolour palette, comprising soft blue, bright red, white skin tones, and black hair details. The two standing-style figures remain in good condition while the girl on the buoy bears a visible repair to the neck. The figures measure 8 cm high by 10 cm wide for the girl in blue. Placed on a bathroom counter or a vanity shelf, the decorative figurines bring a touch of vintage seaside charm and period glamour to interior styling.

FAQs

Art Deco bathing beauties are decorative porcelain figurines produced during the 1920s and 1930s depicting female swimmers in stylish contemporary swimwear. Popularised as coastal souvenirs and vanity accessories, these items reflected the eras emerging beach culture and evolving fashions.

These figures were typically slip-cast from fine porcelain or earthenware, hand-painted with overglaze enamels, and fired to achieve a glossy finish. Details such as facial features, swimsuit colours, and bathing caps were applied manually by factory decorators.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle mould seams, hand-painted facial features with characteristic 1920s cosmetics styles, and smooth glazed bases. Many examples feature stamped maker marks, country of origin impressions such as Germany or Japan, or hand-lettered souvenir inscriptions.

These small decorative objects integrate well into bathroom displays, vanity tables, or styled bookshelves alongside glass bottles and framed prints. Arranging them in small groupings accentuates their sculptural forms while adding historic character to contemporary shelving.

Clean glazed porcelain using a soft microfibre cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners. Ensure moisture does not penetrate unglazed air vents in hollow figurines, and dry the surfaces thoroughly after cleaning.
