This early nineteenth-century French provincial decorative bowl is made from terracotta with slip-ware and earthenware, finished in a cream ground with blue scalloped rim decoration. The interior features a naive folk art illustration of a hunter wearing a black hat, blue jacket with yellow neck scarf, and green trousers, holding a bow and a captured hare. Chipping is visible along the slip-ware border, and the piece shows wear appropriate for its age while remaining structurally sound. The bowl measures 7.6 cm in height and 35.6 cm in diameter. Suitable for display on a sideboard top, the bowl brings rustic farmhouse character to a dining room or living space. It includes an iron band on the reverse enabling wall hanging.

French slipware refers to earthenware ceramics decorated with liquid clay, known as slip, before firing. Popular from the 17th through the 19th centuries in rural France, these pieces frequently feature naive hand-painted motifs, floral patterns, or geometric borders applied over a terracotta base.

Slipware is constructed from local red or buff terracotta clay. Craftspeople coated the formed vessel in light-coloured clay slip and applied coloured oxides, such as copper for green or cobalt for blue, before sealing the piece with a clear lead glaze and kiln-firing it.

Authentic period slipware demonstrates hand-thrown irregularities, visible wheel marks on the underside, and natural glaze crazing or minor rim flaking. Original pieces typically exhibit a unglazed or partially glazed terracotta base showing natural age and wear.

Display slipware bowls as standalone focal points on sideboards, mantelpieces, or wall mounts using plate hangers. The earthy terracotta tones and handmade character complement modern minimalist, rustic farmhouse, and eclectic interior schemes.

Clean gently using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals. Avoid immersing low-fired earthenware in water, as moisture can penetrate cracks in the glaze and degrade the soft clay body underneath.
