This nineteenth-century Victorian English custard set comprises five lidded pots with ornate scrolled handles, resting together on a matching shaped tray measuring 26.5 by 22 cms, with the lidded pots measuring 10 by 7 cms. Each ceramic earthenware piece has a blue and white glaze with a transfer-printed landscape, architectural motifs, and moulded finial lids over a scalloped rim tray. The set exhibits slight chips on two lid tops and a small edge imperfection on the tray from the firing process. Suitable for use on a sideboard top, this tableware serves custard, chutney, or sauces in an English Country House setting. The white ceramic body contrasts with the rich blue transfer print, while the delicately shaped tray features raised borders and the pots include pierced handles and distinctive scrolled finials.

Custard sets gained popularity in nineteenth-century Britain as specialized serving pieces for chilled egg-based desserts. Transfer printing allowed potteries to apply intricate copperplate designs efficiently onto earthenware, bringing ornate blue-and-white dining sets into widespread use.

These sets were typically constructed from earthenware or pearlware coated with a clear lead glaze. The decorative patterns were created by transferring copper-engraved designs using tissue paper infused with cobalt blue oxide prior to final firing.

Authentic period pieces often feature subtle transfer seam lines, glaze crazing, and stilt marks on the underside from kiln firing. Pottery marks or impressed registration diamonds on the base of the tray and cups also help confirm the era of production.

A complete custard set functions effectively as a decorative centerpiece on a dining room sideboard or inside a glass display cabinet. Grouping blue-and-white ceramics together creates a structured visual focal point in modern or traditional spaces.

Clean ceramic sets gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive sponges. Never place antique earthenware in a dishwasher or microwave, as heat and harsh detergents can damage the glaze and underglaze details.
