This pair of antique Staffordshire spaniel figurines dates from the Victorian period, bringing a classic English country house aesthetic to domestic interiors. Modelled as seated dogs in the round, the earthenware pieces are finished with a glossy white glaze and hand-painted enamel decoration featuring rich brown markings, black muzzles, and yellow collars complete with moulded lockets. Each figure displays distinct hand-painted facial features with dark eyes and expressive expressions, capturing the traditional folk art charm of early pottery shelf ornaments. They measure 20 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Placed upon a mantelpiece, sideboard, or open display shelving, these decorative figures add character and traditional style to living spaces, studies, or dining rooms. Their compact proportions allow them to sit neatly on narrow ledges or side tables, offering a balanced symmetrical display when arranged together. The durable earthenware construction and hand-finished details make them well-suited for everyday interior styling, complementing traditional, rustic, or eclectic room schemes with their heritage design.

Originating in 19th-century Staffordshire, England, these lead-glazed earthenware figurines were traditionally produced in facing pairs to flank hearths and mantelpieces, representing King Charles Spaniels.

These figures were produced using press-moulding or slip-casting techniques with earthenware clay, followed by a biscuit firing, glazing, and hand-painted enamel decoration.

Authentic pieces feature visible mould seams, a small air release hole on the base or lower body, age-related crazing within the glaze, and flat or partially unglazed bases.

These ceramic figurines are suited for placement in pairs on mantelpieces, bookshelves, sideboards, or window sills to introduce symmetry and traditional structure to a display.

Dust gently using a soft, dry brush or lint-free microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners or prolonged immersion in water to protect the overglaze enamels.
