This Victorian Staffordshire earthenware flat back figure takes the form of a miniature castle, dated to 1890. The piece displays a lead glaze in a peach tone, enriched with hand-painted details in brown, green, white, and red, along with gold leaf accents on the arched windows, doorways, twin towers, and the raised oval base. Decorative motifs include an encrusted moss texture, a central clock face motif, and a relief cross on the right tower, complemented by applied floral foliage around the central gable. The figure measures 12 cm high, 12.5 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. Placed within an English Country House interior, this ceramic figure sits comfortably on a mantelpiece or a display shelf as a decorative accent. It brings a touch of traditional nineteenth-century craftsmanship to a living room, study, or hallway, integrating easily with collections of period ceramics and decorative objects.

Originating in 19th-century England, Staffordshire flatbacks are earthenware ceramic figures designed with a plain, flattened rear profile specifically intended for placement against a wall or on a narrow mantelpiece.

These ornaments were press-moulded from earthenware, hand-painted with ceramic glazes, and often enhanced with hand-applied shredded clay texturing to emulate foliage or moss, alongside gilded accents.

Authentic pieces typically feature an unglazed or plain flat reverse, fine crazing within the glaze, faint mould seams along the sides, and an absence of modern backstamps or uniform machine perfection.

Position the piece on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or window sill alongside modern art prints or contemporary books to create a balanced, curated display.

Dust the ceramic surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding full immersion in water or abrasive cleaning solutions that could compromise glaze stability or delicate applied details.
