Description

A beautiful late 18th or early 19th century large blue and white delft charger with a repeating swirled floral pattern around a central floral design. The plate has some damage, so please read the condition report, but despite this I think it's one of the most attractive delft plates we’ve had.

Condition: The plate has a large chip to the edge, and has a couple of hairline cracks running from the centre out to the edge (these are easier to see from the rear). There hasn’t been any repair attempted to these, but the plate feels solid, though personally I wouldn’t risk hanging it on a wall in case the means of mounting it put any strain on the cracks.

Dimensions:

Diameter - 34.7cm

Depth - 4.8cm

Tin-glazed earthenware, commonly known as Delftware, originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century as a European response to imported Chinese porcelain, eventually spreading to England and other parts of Europe.

These items are crafted from local clays, fired into earthenware, and coated with an opaque white tin glaze before being hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments, primarily cobalt blue, and given a final clear lead glaze.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as crazing, rim chips exposing the buff or pinkish earthenware body, footrim holes for hanging, and hand-painted brushwork rather than transfer printing.

An antique charger can be mounted on a wall as focal art, displayed on a plate stand on a sideboard, or integrated into a curated gallery wall to add historical texture and contrasting colour to a contemporary space.

Tin-glazed ceramics are fragile and porous, requiring gentle dusting with a dry cloth, avoidance of harsh chemical cleaners, and stable indoor humidity levels to prevent glaze flaking or further rim degradation.
