Delft tiles originated in the Netherlands during the 16th century, heavily influenced by imported Chinese porcelain. Production peaked in the 17th and 18th centuries, with workshops in towns such as Rotterdam and Utrecht producing tin-glazed earthenware tiles featuring landscapes, biblical scenes, and domestic motifs.

Authentic period tiles are crafted from local clay, fired to form a biscuit body, and then coated with a tin-oxide glaze that provides a white, opaque surface. Pigmentssuch as cobalt blue or manganese purplewere hand-painted onto the unfired glaze before a final high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristic signs of age, including a porous red or buff earthenware biscuit body visible on the unglazed sides and reverse, minor glaze chipping along the edges (fritting), and slight irregularities in the hand-painted brushwork. The corners typically feature specific geometric framing motifs like ox-heads or spider-heads.

These pieces can be mounted and framed as wall art, inset into fireplace surrounds, or displayed on specialist stands within traditional or eclectic interior schemes to introduce historical texture and visual interest.

Preservation involves keeping the tiles in a stable environment away from high humidity and direct moisture to protect the fragile tin-glazed surface and historic ceramic body. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle dusting with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding any chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners.
