How do you clean the top?

Dust the surface gently with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid spray polishes, which often contain silicones that build up and cloud the finish over time. If the piece requires more attention, apply a thin coat of good quality beeswax once or twice a year. Buff it off quickly to prevent a sticky residue forming on the veneer. Always rub in the direction of the underlying wood grain where possible.

My table has a section where the pattern has lifted off and is missing, can a restorer fix this without ruining the rest?

Cabinet-makers regularly patch missing sections of veneer. A skilled restorer will cut a new piece of matching timber and colour it to blend with the surrounding area. They use reversible animal hide glue, exactly as the original makers did. This ensures the repair moves naturally with the timber and does not damage the adjacent antique surfaces.

What causes cracks in the pattern?

Changes in humidity cause the solid carcase beneath to expand and contract. The thin decorative layer cannot move, resulting in split lines. These fine cracks show natural movement over several centuries.

I inherited a piece with metal detailing mixed in with the wood, but the brass elements are slightly raised above the surface. Why?

Wood shrinks naturally over time as it loses moisture, but brass does not. This difference means the metal elements eventually sit slightly proud of the timber ground. It happens on almost all pieces mixing metal and wood. Sanding the brass flat would ruin the finish, so it is better left alone.
