How do I clean dirty Parian ware figures safely?

Dusting with a soft brush removes surface dirt. Parian is unglazed, so the slightly textured surface traps dust easily over the decades. Washing requires care. A mild detergent and lukewarm water usually work, but never soak a piece that might have old repairs. Water can dissolve antique glues.

I found this old plate in my grandmother's attic and it has these fine cracks all over the clear part on the top, does that mean it's broken or is that normal for old plates like this?

Those fine lines are called crazing. The glaze shrinks at a different rate to the clay body beneath it as it cools down. This causes a network of microscopic cracks to form. It happens frequently on nineteenth-century earthenwares. Crazing does not mean the plate is structurally compromised. It can allow moisture and stains to seep under the glaze.

Can you put antique Copeland in the dishwasher?

Wash nineteenth-century ceramics by hand. Modern machine detergents strip away overglaze enamels. Underglaze patterns might survive, but repeated temperature shocks routinely crack the clear finish.

When looking at these old blue and white meat platters they always seem to have this deep groove at one end with a little well, what on earth was that actually designed to do when serving a meal?

That is a gravy tree. The grooved channels catch the juices from roasted meat while it sits on the table. They guide the liquid down into the deeper collecting well at one end. A host could then spoon the juices over the sliced portions. They're often found on the largest antique Copeland serving platters.
