Georgian Mahogany Extending Dining Table with 3 Removable Leaves After the Designs of Wilkinson & Wilkinson of London

18th century
Description

Georgian / Regency solid Mahogany extending DINING TABLE with FOUR different sized surfaces (3 removable leaves), and scissor action after the designs of Wilkinson & Wilkinson of London.

The figured mahogany dining table retains the original brass clips and the three solid mahogany leaves. The patented scissor action to the dining table means that the table can retract and expand depending on the number of diners. The table collapses down to one D-End section and three leaves. The scissor action retracts inside the D-Section at one end. The beautiful top has a twin reeded edge above a mahogany veneered frieze.

The table action is of high quality with the superstructure being made of solid maple and raised on crisply turned, reeded and tapered legs, terminating on capped gilt brass castors.

The table will seat 8 comfortably, 10 informally.

Dimensions: Fully extended Length: 82.5 inches (210cm). Width: 48 inches (122cm). Height: 27.95 inches (71cm).

Dated: c.1810-20

About the Cabinet-Maker: This type of extending dining table was first advertised in 1807 by the cabinet-making firm of Wilkinson & Sons of Brokers Row, and later Ludgate Hill, London. Although this table is not stamped Wilkinson & Wilkinson of London, it has the same Scissor-Action. The brass mounted scissor action frame was a Wilkinson patent. This ingenious form of extension allows the table to be reduced to a small fold-over side table when not in use. Other leading forms of the period also experimented with this form of action, most notably Gillows of Lancaster.
