Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Louis XVI style emerged in France during the late 18th century, characterised by a return to classical straight lines, symmetry, and architectural motifs inspired by Greco-Roman excavations, departing from the curved extravagance of the preceding Rococo period.

Authentic pieces from this period typically feature solid hardwoods such as oak or beech, often ebonised or veneered, and are heavily accented with cast gilt-bronze or ormolu mounts, marquetry inlay, and sometimes marble tops.

Authentication involves examining traditional joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, inspecting the quality and chisel work of the bronze mounts, checking for age-appropriate timber shrinkage, and looking for makers stamps or guild marks where applicable.

This piece can serve as a striking contrast in a contemporary setting by pairing it with minimalist seating and neutral walls, allowing the classical proportions and metallic detailing to act as a sophisticated focal point.

Maintain wooden and ebonised surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the finish without sealing in moisture.
