An outstanding and rare 18th Century Irish Mahogany Tea Table of superb colour and patina. In good honest original condition, retaining the original brass handle and having few repairs. The design and execution of craftsmanship is first class. The piece was undoubtably made by a firm of leading furniture makers of the period and probably a commission for an important Irish house. The shaping and carving to the legs is simply fabulous, it flows from top to bottom seamlessly incorporating a carved shell to the knee and scrolled ear pieces, finishing in a wonderfully shaped ankle and scroll carved foot. The construction of this table differs from the norm as the section of timber forming the leg continues out of the solid to form the shaped round to the corners above as do the scrolled ear pieces. This is incredibly rare and makes the construction much stronger as it is all cut from the solid and not blocked up and veneered.
A masterpiece in Irish Furniture making made from the fines...t heavy Mahogany timbers. Circa 1750.
A similar example of shaped and carved leg can be seen on a stool in the book:
( Irish Furniture The Knight Of Glin & James Peill ) page 219.
