Fine Quality Japanese Satsuma Bowl By Genzan

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this fine quality Meiji Period 1868-1912 , deep sided Satsuma bowl in the form of a chawan (tea bowl), the exterior richly decorated with panels of figures, flowers and landscapes within a background of pheasants amidst flora, the base decorated with formal geometric lappets, the rim gilded with tapering banners in the manner of Seikozans work, meanwhile the inside of this bowl is an explosion of colourful butterflies, literally hundreds of microscopic butterflies painstakingly hand painted within the deep interior, the underside of the bowl signed with a four character seal for Genzan, a well recorded late 19th century painter.

UK collection having previously been recorded as sold at Woolley & Wallis, 21st May 2008, lot 423, £4,500 plus 25% buying fees .

Fine condition with minimal age related wear.
