A Chinese Export Style Lacquer and Chinoiserie Decorated Tripod Table, London C.1920

Description

Very decorative and rather chic.

Chinoiserie and lacquer furniture enjoyed a revival of interest in fashionable circles in the 1920s. Retailers such as Heals and Liberty of London offered examples along side their more recognisibly modern furniture and furnishings, while the British/Irish avant-garde designers including Betty Joel and Eilleen Gray were influenced by Chinese forms and decoration. This table may have been made by the firm of Hille, who specialised in chinoserie during this period, although are better known today for their association with Robin Day.

Good condition overall, some typical minor surface abrasions to the top (as illustrated). Lacking clip receptor, so no 'snap', and fillet that secures birdcage to the shaft.

69.5cm high x 68.5cm diameter
