This is quite literally the largest pestle and mortar that I have ever seen ( apart from a 4ft one in the kitchens at Glastonbury Abbey!) , and is a complete and utter statement piece! It is stamped as size ''11'' on both the pestle and the mortar, and is a beautiful creamy white stoneware, the pestle having a turned beech handle.Dating from the Victorian period, this is either from the kitchens of a grand country house, or could also have been used in an apothecary - either way, it''s done some serious grinding in its day!Measuring 34cm in diameter to the spout, 33cm standard diameter and standing 18cm tall, the pair are unbelievably heavy. The pestle is 33 cm long. both are in excellent condition with no cracks or chips, just the surface wear that you would expect from a well used utility piece of its age, but as the photo show it displays beautifully and is a real stunner.Please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information or photographs.I...
