Staffordshire Holy Water Stoup

Description

A really lovely and intriguing Staffordshire flat-back holy water stoup, comprising of the central figures of Mary and the Infant Christ, flanked by two standing angels and a pair of winged cherub masks. This subject is not found quite as often as the usual dogs and figures, so it really makes a striking centrepiece.

The glaze has a lovely blueish hue as with many of the Victorian and older Staffordshire pieces, and each figure has a painted characterful face. The stoup is in a good condition, but has one small historical repair to the lower left corner (which I've added as the last photograph, so you know which one you're looking for) but it displays well and is barely noticeable when in situ. There are some very slight losses to the paint which is to be expected with all figures of this age.
